Avera Sacred Heart Wellness Center

Opened in 2003, the Avera Sacred Heart Surgery Center started a new tradition of health and fitness. Accommodating a variety of unique, medically-based services and programs in a state-of-the-art facility and located on the Avera Sacred Heart Hospital campus. 

RWI: A Distinctive Facility

The entire building measures 33,140 square feet with 9,620 square feet dedicated to rehab and wellness services. The second floor of the building houses the Avera Sacred Heart Wellness Center, cardiac and pulmonary rehab, outpatient physical therapy and aquatic therapy. A deli and physician offices are also located on the second floor. The first floor houses the Avera Same Day Surgery Center.

The building was designed to use natural light as much as possible. Large windows located on the front and sides of the building, combined with skylights over the pool area, provide a warm, spacious feeling. On the third floor mezzanine level, aerobic exercise participants enjoy a magnificent view of Yankton through the front windows of the building. 

The building includes a refinished and expanded parking lot with landscaping and outdoor lighting. There is also indoor access to the hospital and Benedictine Center through an entrance located midway in the tunnel.

Two Specially-Designed Rehab and Fitness Pools

Two pools, a 20’ x 50’ exercise pool and a 7’x 21’ therapeutic pool, are located on the second floor toward the rear of the RWI building. Both pools will be appropriately heated for therapeutic purposes although the smaller pool will be warmer to meet the needs of rehab patients. The exercise pool is equipped with swim jets and a unique underwater treadmill. A special patient lift is available to assist individuals in and out of the pools. Two family locker rooms are located within a few feet of the pool for easy access and both are wheelchair accessible. 

Specialized Staff: A Holistic Approach to Rehab and Wellness

Physicians and specialized therapists – physical, cardiac and pulmonary - combine their expertise to provide a broad array of wellness services in the facility. Focusing on the mind, body and spirit, Avera Sacred Heart’s holistic programming promotes lifestyle changes and empowers individuals to optimize health and healing. An exercise physiologist, fitness experts, and athletic trainers encourage people to achieve their maximum fitness by utilizing a wide range of appropriate programs. Dietitians are available for nutrition counseling.

Avera Sacred Heart Wellness Center

When arriving to exercise in the spacious, state-of-the-art Wellness Center, members are greeted by the friendly, helpful staff. The facility was designed under the “mind-body-spirit” model that promotes a well-balanced approach to fitness and good health. Our community-based Wellness Center offers opportunities for all ages and capabilities. Family locker rooms are wheelchair accessible. 

If you are trying to lose a few pounds, improve your strength, stay fit or just feel better, the Wellness Center offers a non-threatening, comfortable atmosphere for exercising. Programming options include yoga, kickboxing, tai chi and senior toning classes – along with a variety of aerobics classes and personalized training. A specialized aerobic floor has been installed to minimize impact and injury. 

Exercise equipment is grouped with some of our current models. Equipment includes precor treadmills, recumbent bikes and an elliptical machines. We also have Concept 2 rowing machines, Hoist selectorized weight equipment including a piece that is specifically designed for wheelchair users. We also have free weights and much more! All Wellness Center members will receive a free orientation to the equipment.

Classes Available at Wellness Center

Avera Sacred Heart Wellness Center offers a variety of group exercise classes to fit your fitness needs. Improve your cardiovascular system and flexibility while building strength and friendships. All classes are included in a regular membership or may be purchased separately.

Circuit – This combination of cardiovascular exercise and strength training alternated in intervals is a great way to increase your metabolism! Turn up the heat and burn tons of calories in this one.

Tuesday & Thursday 8:30-9:15am  (Wellness Center Aerobics Balcony)

Power Toning – This class is structured to provide you with a great strength-building workout. Instructors will motivate you through a variety of exercises that will make you lean and mean. This class is all about power!

Tuesday & Thursday 5:30-6:30pm (Wellness Center Aerobics Balcony)

Senior Toning – Designed for older adults this class provides a cardiovascular workout, while building strength and bone density as well as improving flexibility and balance.

Monday, Wednesday & Friday 11:15am-12pm (Benedictine Center 4th Floor)

Step – One of the most popular trends of the past two decades, Step continues to provide participants with a great, choreographed cardiovascular workout. Using rhythmic movements performed on and off a variable-height platform, Step also challenges and improves coordination and balance. It is taught in a multi-level format so it can meet the needs of a variety of fitness levels.

Tuesday & Thursday 12:15-1pm (Wellness Center Aerobics Balcony)

Water - High energy, low impact workout class, held in the shallow end of the pool.  There is a strong cardio segment combined with strength training, using resistant equipment and stretching to improve flexibility. Whether you’re a beginner or advanced this class will provide you with a challenging and fun workout.

Yoga – An enjoyable and relaxing class that focuses on flexibility and building strength. This ancient health and fitness discipline offers many benefits including stress reduction, emotional wellness, improved strength, flexibility, balance and postural alignment.   Traditional yoga class incorporating stretching and strengthening poses and movements. Breathing techniques, posture and meditative aspects are also focuses of these classes.

Aquatic Therapy and Exercise 

After entering the warm water, aquatic exercise participants are surrounded by the distinctive design of blue and green tiles surround both pools. In addition to the specialized equipment such as the water jets and underwater treadmill, physical therapists provide skilled guidance for individually-designed aquatic therapy programs. People can enroll in a variety of water aerobics or arthritis classes or use the pool(s) for their own individualized programs.

Outpatient Therapy Programs

Physical therapists are dedicated to improving the life of their patients and work towards getting people back to living life to its fullest potential. Included in the RWI will be an array of outpatient and inpatient rehab services including occupational medicine. Patients can utilize a variety of individualized land or water therapy programs under the supervision of physical therapists. 

Cardiac Rehab 

 If you have experienced heart problems, a cardiac rehab program can get your heart in gear, improve your health and help you live longer. The Avera Sacred Heart cardiac rehabilitation program concentrates on lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, as well as psychological issues. Programs are customized for each person’s needs. The exercise component is designed to help patients achieve and maintain a healthy weight and control diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, reduce stress and increase energy levels. Relocated in the RWI, cardiac therapists are available five days a week for Phase 2 and 3 of cardiac outpatient and rehab care. Cardiac Rehab, Phase 1 is located in the hospital.

Healing the Heart

In addition, the Healing the Heart program – a holistic approach to heart care - is available for individuals with or without heart disease. Classes are taught by a multi-professional team including a cardiologist, psychologist, therapist, exercise specialists and nutritionist. Programs deal with medical issues as well as stress management, nutrition and exercise. 

Pulmonary Rehab

If you feel short of breath most of the time, can't breathe well enough to tolerate even moderate exercise or frequently cough, you may be a good candidate for pulmonary rehab. Now relocated in the Rehab and Wellness Institute, pulmonary therapists are available five days a week to assist patients through Phase 2 and 3 of the program which combines education, exercise training and behavioral intervention to help restore patients to the highest possible level of independent living. Pulmonary Rehab, Phase 1, is located in the hospital. 

The Vitality Program

The Vitality Program is designed to help people reach a healthier lifestyle. If you have just completed physical therapy, cardiac or pulmonary rehab, the Vitality Program can provide additional assistance with your exercise and wellness routine. 

Athletic/Sports Enhancement Programs

Whether you are an athlete in high school, hoping to become a professional athlete or just want to enjoy a sport or two, it's important to try to be in shape or run the risk of significant problems. Our athletic trainers will help you avoid injuries, get in shape and perhaps even improve your game!  Check out our Intensive Challenge Center. We also have a Junior Intensive Challenge Center for athletes between the ages of 10-14.

Medical Services and Screenings

Our members have free access too Polar Heart Rate Monitors and Blood pressure checks. If someone requires immediate medical attention, physician and nursing emergency staff are only minutes away. We also offer a wide variety of health screening services including lipid, glucose, metabolic and thyroid laboratory testing to name a few, as well as fitness, bone density and cancer screens.

The Garden Spot Cafe

After your workout at the Wellness Center or when your cardiac rehab appointment is finished, take a moment to rest and enjoy a nutritious snack at the Garden Spot Cafe. Customers dine in a lovely room surrounded by windows or eat outside on the patio in pleasant weather. The Garden Spot provides healthy choices and other nourishing options for meals and snacks.

  • Reflexology - Experience relaxing therapy of your whole body through massage of the meridians and reflexes in your feet.

Avera Wellness Profiles

Several Avera Wellness Profile packages are available to provide you with the tools to manage your healthy lifestyle and track your progress including laboratory testing, lifestyle assessment, fitness testing and a consultation with an exercise physiologist. Exercise physiologists can also assist you with fitness goal setting, program development and maintenance.

The Rehabilitation and Wellness Institute houses the clinic of Terence Pedersen, DPM, podiatrist, Yankton Family Foot and Ankle Center; and the American Pain Relief Institute under the medical directorship of William Cohen, MD.
