December 30, 2008 ‘Celebration of Survival’ event planned in Ellendale Avera Clinic of Ellendale is presenting “A Celebration of Survival,” a special day for those touched by cancer, on Saturday, Jan. 10, at the Ellendale Opera House, 65 S. Main St. The day promises to be filled with hope, strength and support. Whether you know someone with cancer, have cancer yourself, or just want to know more, you’re invited to take part in the day’s education and arts program, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

December 17, 2008 BirthPlace scores high in practices that support infant feeding Avera St. Luke’s BirthPlace scored very well on a 2007 quality survey on maternity care practices and infant nutrition and care. In the first year of this national assessment, responses came from 2,690 birth facilities, or 82 percent of all hospitals and birth centers nationwide that provide maternity services.

December 17, 2008 Make the right choice – don’t drive after drinking The message is clear. The message is simple. Make the right choice during the holiday season by designating a sober driver. “Avera St. Luke’s encourages people to drive safely this holiday season and reminds everyone that impaired driving is a deadly crime that we cannot afford to overlook in our community,” said Jamie Milbrandt, community prevention networker at Avera St. Luke’s Nadric Addiction Services. “The greatest tragedy is that deaths due to alcohol-related crashes are preventable — these are not accidents.”

December 2, 2008 Avera St. Luke’s nurses recognized for excellence Three nurses from Avera St. Luke’s have been honored with Avera Nursing Excellence awards. Randy Pudwill, a nursing supervisor, was honored as a “Distinguished Service Care Provider.” Linda Buck, Home Health, who works in both Aberdeen and Ellendale, N.D., was honored for “Commitment to Caring.” Kathy Gubin, Avera St. Luke’s Palliative Care nurse who also works with Home Health/Hospice, received the “Innovation” honor.

November 26, 2008 Special care recognized during Hospice and Palliative Care Month Caring for a loved one in the final stages of life is a very special kind of caring, especially when that family member can stay at home. Avera St. Luke's North Plains Hospice staff and volunteers are committed to helping people during the final stage of life's journey, providing care in the warmth and comfort of their chosen environment surrounded by family and friends. North Plains Hospice provides Christian-based caring and support for terminally ill people and their families. During November, which is Hospice and Palliative Care Month, the message of hope, dignity and love is one that resonates at every level.

November 19, 2008 This Thanksgiving, don’t ‘unbuckle’ until you get home The Thanksgiving holiday should be a joyous time for all families in America, but far too often the celebration turns into tragedy on the state’s highways. Last year, over the long Thanksgiving weekend in South Dakota, there were 260 total reported crashes. From those accidents, the state recorded 57 injuries and seven fatalities. The number of total crashes and injuries over the Thanksgiving time frame is declining, but the level of fatalities is at its highest level.

November 13, 2008 Check out State Street Medical Square at open house The public is welcome to come and see the new Avera St. Luke’s State Street Medical Square at an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20. Featured at the open house will be Aberdeen Family Physicians, the anchor tenant on the first floor of the $11.8 million facility built by Avera St. Luke’s, and State Street Pharmacy.

November 4, 2008 New HeartSmart screening offered for just $50 Are you at risk for heart disease? For just $50, you can now get a HeartSmart comprehensive heart screening through Avera St. Luke’s, a new service being offered to the Aberdeen region to help with the early detection of cardiovascular risk and preventing heart disease.

October 21, 2008 Avera St. Luke’s Supports Proposed Expansion of South Dakota ’s Medical School Avera St. Luke’s supports the proposed expansion of the Sanford School of Medicine of the University of South Dakota. The University of South Dakota is exploring the expansion of enrollment and increasing class size at the medical school.

October 16, 2008 Physical therapists know it’s all about movement “Physical Therapy: It’s all About Movement” is the theme for October, Physical Therapy Month. We often don’t truly appreciate the ability to move until we are unable to do it, due to pain, disease or injury.
